Match Report

United brought in Doug and Walter Smith to the side to face a confident Hibs side who have scored 53 league goals already this season. Frank Kopel was the man on the bench. Hibs made one change with Des Bremner replacing leg break victim, John Brownlie. Both side wore black armbands in tribute of former United player and director, Duncan Hutchison, who died the previous day. There was a minute's silence before kick off.

Cropley was first to threaten for Hibs when he beat three United defenders before being crowded out. However, he was able to release Duncan who threw in a dangerous cross but it eluded everyone. Walter Smith then went close on the 12th minute when his low drive from the edge of the box whistled wide. United were playing well against their in form visitors and took the lead in the 39th minute. Cameron swung in the cross and Andy Rolland rose to smash a header of the post. The ball bounced along the line and the Hibs 'keeper flicked it out the goal. Amid much protest from the men in green, the referee awarded the goal. With a minute left before half time United almost doubled their lead. Gardner split the defence with a great pass and Cameron failed to capitalise with just the 'keeper to beat.

Kopel replaced the injured Rolland at half time but it was Hibs who came out all guns blazing. O'Rourke headed a Schaedler cross just inches wide six minutes into the second half. With Hibs pushing forward, United were breaking well on the counter. Traynor came close on the hour and then Kopel knocked a cross against the post. Soon after there was a tremendous scrimmage in the United penalty area, with Cropley eventually hitting his shot against a defender before it was cleared. With seconds left Hibs came close again from a corner. Duncan couldn't connect with the cross and it bounced harmlessly out of play.
