Just over 11,000 turned out in the sunshine for the last home game of Celtic's seventh championship year. It was a less than pulsating encounter, won comfortably by the home side. Tommy Traynor in for Ian Mitchell was the only change for United following their 2-0 win against Aberdeen.
With the league already won, Celtic players were really just playing for a place in their cup final team. Dundee United on the other hand still harboured hopes of winning a place in the Texaco Cup next season. The first half lacked goals and also the edge of competition. the first 45 minutes passed by with little to excite those in attendance. Murdoch and Connelly were most impressive for Celtic and controlled the midfield.
All of Celtic’s goals came after the interval, the first only a minute after. McAlpine was distracted by Deans and was unable to hold a cross by Brogan. The ball broke to Jimmy Johnstone, who showed quick feet to score from close range. Bobby Lennox doubled the Celtic lead soon after. McNeill rose high to a Johnstone corner and headed forward. Almost on the goal-line Lennox had the simple task of back-heading the ball into the net. The third did not come until seven minutes from time when Dixie Deans ran through to score after being played through by Johnstone. A tired performance by United with only Rolland and Cameron gaining pass marks.
