Match Report

United were without forwards Knox and Traynor for this one. Meanwhile Hearts introduced young centre half John Gallacher for Allan Anderson. Rain had poured heavily ahead of the game and left the pitch very soft and muddy.

United were first to threaten and a Cameron flick left Kopel clear only for Brown to block. United pushed forward incessantly in the opening twenty minutes and were therefore shocked when Hearts broke to open the scoring. Tommy Murray progressed down the right and his cross was met perfectly by Eric Carruthers who headed home. Kopel and Gardner came close for United but they could not peg back Hearts in the first half.

On the hour mark, Kenny Cameron fired in the equaliser after Mitchell had gone close just moments earlier. No sooner had United finished celebrating did Hearts go upfield and restore their lead. Again it was Eric Carruthers on target for the Jam Tarts. Then in a two minute spell towards the end of the game, United turned this one on it's head. First in 79 minutes, Sandy White scored and then in 81 minutes Frank Kopel clinched the game.
