Airdrie were battling to avoid relegation in this one and can be relatively satisfied with a point from a tough encounter with Dundee United. Jim McLean had reshaped his team on the back of a 2-2 draw with East Fife, giving Pat Gardner the role of Centre Forward for this one.
The move looked to have paid off just minutes into the game when Gardner forced McKenzie into a great save. Soon after Gardner carved open the Airdrie defence only for their 'keeper to again deny United, this time it was Knox who failed to beat him. However, Airdrie could not hold out for long and on 18 minutes United took the lead. Gardner and Knox again combined enabling Archie Knox to race in on goal, round the 'keeper and slot home into the empty net. Airdrie then forced a number of corners in the lead up to half time before finally levelling on the stroke of half time. Drew Jarvie was the scorer after heading home powerfully from a Wilson corner.
It was all Airdrie in the second half but the United defence, marshalled by Copland and Smith, held together well. In 63 minutes Airdrie claimed for a penalty when Wilson was impeded en-route to goal. It was waved away by McKee. Airdrie lacked the composure and finesse to break down the United defence and the Tannadice men left Broomfield with a hard earned point.
