A power crisis enveloped the country and due to the miners strike there was no floodlighting at Ibrox, so this was literally day-light robbery by Rangers. The Tangerines showed most of the class and made, but admittedly, spurned chances galore. A draw was the least United deserved; but even that was denied them six minutes from the end when Dave Smith pounded upfield and was at full stretch to slide a Conn cross past Hamish McAlpine.
