Davy Wilson returned for United for this Derby match, whilst Dundee fielded former Tannadice man Ian Scott in attack. Tannadice was packed for this first match between the clubs in 1972.
Dundee were first to threaten and McAlpine had to be sharp to make a diving save from Duncan. After just four minutes Wallace fired wide after Scott released him. United were lucky to survive in 14 minutes when Ian Scott took advantage of a McAlpine clearance and shot towards an empty net. Walter Smith managed to dive and head the ball behind for a corner much to McAlpine's relief. Duncan missed another great chance on the half hour, the winger making a poor connection on a Wallace cross and the ball flew wide. It came as a great surprise when United took the lead. Kenny Cameron chipped home from a Mitchell cross in the 34th minute.
Dundee roared onto the attack again in the second half, desperate to get the equaliser. However, it was Cameron who almost scored his second on 53 minutes when his header just sailed over the bar. United's Alan gordon was carried off after a clash with Jim Steele, to be replaced by Sandy White. Ironically it was Jimmy Steele who claimed a goal for Dundee late on and rescued a point for the Dark Blues in a game they did not deserve to lose.
