The last time football was played on Christmas Day saw United gain both points as their present. The other notable feature was that this was Jim McLean's first win after taking over as manager. There was an element of surprise that United took the lead after six minutes because, Dunfermline had made the decidedly better start to the match.
However, Arrol, distracted by Kenny Cameron, allowed a head flick from Alan Gordon to beat him. Four minutes later Jim Cameron fired in a qreat first (and his only) goal for the club with a near post shot. Barry Mitchell pulled one back for the Pars in the 25th minute. The Pars equalised after 53 minutes when Hamish McAlpine could only push a Gardner rocket shot out to the feet of O'Neil who netted easily.
However, the visitors were reduced to ten men Scott was sent off, but Dunfermline looked to be holding out until five minutes from the end when Kenny Cameron converted a spot-kick award.
