Match Report

For their crunch match at Parkhead, Dundee United left out Graham Payne. He made way for the return of George Fleming. Payne dropped to the bench. Celtic's Vic Davidson was unfit and replaced by George McCluskey. Bobby Lennox and ex-United man Tom McAdam were dropped to the bench.

Celtic got off to a strong start and were at United from the opening whistle. Proven was quick to get down the line and swing in a cross for Conroy, however his header flashed just wide. United countered with a determined run by Addison which was enough to gain them a corner. However, Fleming wasted the set play by failing to get it beyond the first man. United came close in nine minutes after Burns fouled Fleming on the half-way line. Narey's free kick was headed on by Hegarty to Dodds, but the striker's header wasn't strong enough to beat Latchford. A bad MacLeod pass afforded Sturrock a half chance, but he pushed his effort beyond the post. Sturrock then had another effort minutes later after a McGrain error. Against the striker fired wide. United had most of the chances in a nervy first half and they took the lead just before the interval. Sturrock disposed the dithering Edvaldsson about 40 yards out and ran the length of the half into the Celtic penalty area. The winger managed to get a cross in and it was perfect for Davie Dodds who headed home.

Almost from the kick-off, Burns sent Doyle clear. His cross found Proven in the clear but the ball bounced awkwardly and ended up being cleared. In 50 minutes Sturrock and Aitken were booked for a scuffle. Holt then had an effort, but he shot wildly over in a good position after a long throw by Stark. In 58 minutes, Celtic managed to get the equaliser. Lynch floated over a free-kick which Aitken met with his head. McAlpine rose to punch clear but harassed by Johnny Doyle, the ball fell into the net. It wasn't long before Celtic got another and went into the lead. The referee adjudged Stark to pull down Doyle in the box and despite claims to the contrary, the penalty was given. It was Andy Lynch who stepped up to score from the spot. United brought on Payne for Kirkwood and Kopel for Sturrock. McAlpine then punched clear from the head of Doyle as Celtic turned the screw. Narey picked up a booking in 82 minutes for speaking out of turn. United had one last chance to snatch something from the game but Payne's goal bound effort was saved by Latchford.
