Match Report

United stuck by the same starting eleven that had done so well in recent weeks, as they faced an Aberdeen side that had been knocked out of the European Cup Winners Cup by Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday, and were on the run of three successive league defeats. Forward Graham Honeyman, who had recently joined on a month long trial, had been added to the pool for the match but but just failed to make the line-up, whereas Paul Sturrock and Ray Stewart had successfully come through training in the days before.

Aberdeen threatened first, with Steve Archibald heading just over from a Sullivan cross. Bobby Clark had to stretch to palm a Graeme Payne shot round the post after a great pass from Kirkwood. From the clearance Aberdeen are awarded a penalty, when Joe Harper is felled in the box and the referee is in no doubt - Harper himself put the Dons ahead. United claimed their own penalty when Willie Miller appeared to handle in the box from a Kopel free-kick, but they were denied by the referee. Archibald headed wide of the far post, and from the goal-kick Addison's cross into the box had to be touched over by Clark. Good play by Sturrock lead to Narey heading just wide of the post, and just before half-time Miller is booked for a foul on Sturrock.

There wasn't much between the sides and on the hour mark United were given the chance to equalise when Narey is foulded in the box and Ray Stewart steps up to take the spot-kick. However, his effort clipped the woodwork and went wide. A 25 yarder from Koepl had Clark scrambling the shot away at the foot of the post. Kirkwood had an intelligent run into an empty space to flick on a Stark inswinger but watched his effort shave the post, then Davie Dodds first-time effort was colelcted by Clark. Aberdeen had the ball in the net for a second time, but the Scanlon was deemed offside. Fleming was then booked for a foul on Strachan. Hardly a classic between the sides, with over-anxiety robbing the game of any vestige of rhythm, with the two story of two different penalties making the difference.
