Match Report

United went into this second leg tie, trailing 3-2 to Celtic after a narrow defeat to the Glasgow side at Tannadice earlier in the week.

Swirling wind was having a big impact on the game early on, although it didn't spoil the excitement of the game. Celtic had to recast their defence after 29 minutes when Roddie MacDonald, who almost scored with a superb header earlier, limped off with an ankle injury. Glavin replaced him. Aitken moved back alongside Edvaldsson in the centre of defence. The only scare for the home side in the first half came when their 'keeper fluffed a throw-out, leaving himself stranded 18 yards from goal. Edvaldsson raced back to over and although Frye tried to place the shot around him, the iceman was able to smash the ball away from danger.

Things looked ominous for United early in the second half when they lost a player. Experienced midfielder George Fleming had been booked in the 15th minute for a foul on Tommy Burns and was booked again in the 58th minute, this time for a foul on Tom McAdam. Things got a little ragged after his departure and Roy Aitken was booked for a foul on Paul Hegarty. Then John Holt was booked for a foul on Aitken, all within the space of 4 minutes. It quietened down after this as 10 man United kept plugging away. Then seven minutes from time, much to the disgust of the United payers, referee Eddie Pringle awarded a penalty kick to Celtic after Burns became meat in a United defensive sandwich. NArey protested strongly and he was booked too. Substitute Ronnie Glavin blasted home the penalty kick and Celtic sighed with relief. McAlpine, Narey and Payne were United's best players on the day but could stop Celtic progressing.
