Match Report

Dreadful conditions greeted the crowd that braved the trip to Fir Park for this match. The foul weather had an impact on the attendance with on 3372 heading to the ground. Injuries had forced many changes in both sides. Youth was given the opportunity. The most notable absentee for United was their talisman Paul Sturrock.

The weather played havoc with the quality on offer to those who turned up. However, it was United who made the best of conditions. They were able to force themselves ahead midway through the first half. It was a well taken goal by United. Davie Dodds sited himself astutely to clip in a clever cross from the left by Holt. The plus for United was that the goal came when they were shooting against the wind.

For all of the second half Motherwell struggled against the wind and tide, while United were content to blot up in the centre any feeble ambition that Motherwell showed. Arithmetically a good result for United, it was also costly. Fleming had to leave the scene of the action to join their list of injured. Pettigrew and Capaldi, a likely looking lad, had a good shot apiece. There was nothing else for Motherwell's comfort, except that Wark again deserved good marks for effort. His optimistic spirit seemed unquenchable. When all about him faded, he kept toiling away. Narey, Hegarty and Payne, who replaced Fleming, did just enough for United and did it well. McAlpine threw superbly from the hand. In the end it was dour efficiency that earned United their first league win and put Motherwell bottom of the table.
