Celtic started this match looking lively in front of a near 30,000 crowd. Brogan put Johnstone clear early on but his cross to Auld was cut out by McAlpine. As Celtic tried to assert themselves, United played a tight formation and gave nothing away. Both Dalglish and Auld squandered good chances with McAlpine performing heroics. He was also quick to steal the ball of the toes of Willie Wallace and to stop a rasper from Hood. In 32 minutes, United took the lead against the run of play. A free-kcik was awarded against Gemmell. Watson took the kick and laid the ball off to Andy Rolland who struck home from all of 30 yards. United gained confidence from this goal and were the better side going into half time. There looked to be two United players to every Celtic player on the pitch at that stage.
The second half started as the first finished with United dominant and Celtic chasing their tails. The Celtic fans were not amused and were giving their team the slow hand-clap. It looked like United would hold onto their lead until out of nothing Willie Wallace found himself in the clear and clean through on McAlpine. Quick as a flash, the ball was nestled in the back of the net and Celtic were level. That was how the score remained but everyone left the match agreeing it was one of the best of the season.
