Match Report

The fact that this clash was the first fixture at Ibrox after the New Years Day disaster had a major effect on the occasion with the crowd in understandably sombre mood.

That transmitted itself on to the park with neither side getting to grips with the game at any stage. The thirteenth minute proved unlucky for United when Dave Smith waltzed past a couple of United defenders before squaring the ball to John Greig who finished in impeccable fashion. But United gradually forced their way into contention and a near thing from Alan Devlin proceeded the visitor's equaliser five minutes after the interval. Tommy Traynor, Alan Devlin and Jackie Copland all helped combine to create the opening for Alec Reid. He rounded Jardine before sliding home a neat effort to count against his former club.

The Tannadice men maintained their ascendancy until the end and only the woodwork allowed Rangers to ultimately prise a point out of the eventual scoreline.
