The scoreline conceals the true margin of Hearts superiority over United in this Tynecastle meeting played in perfect conditions.

Right from the start Hearts made and promptly missed chance after chance. Yet United had two of the best chance of the opening period with Kenny Cameron hitting a Davie Wilson cross straight at Jim Cruickshank. Jim Henry then shot narrowly past as United looked as though they might cause an upset.

The second half again belonged to Hearts with the Tannadice goal surviving a couple of amazing escapes and Hamish McAlpine bringing off a several fine saves, most notably when he beat down a fierce drive from Young. But United's luck ran out on them in the final ten minutes. First Andy Rolland was stretchered off following a collision with Brown and two minutes later Hearts finally made the break-through. Alan Anderson ran on to a Fleming cross gave Hamish McAlpine no chance from close-in. Just on time a mix-up in the home defence gave Kenny Cameron sight of the target, but the centre again shot straight at the keeper.
