Having been suffering the disappointment of exiting from the League Cup without being defeated, United stretched their uncanny knack of drawing matches with this one at Muirton. It was their seventh of the season - out of eight outings! To be fair to Saints, United found themselves on the rack for most of the first half and were grateful to go in for their half-time cuppa still on level terms against a home side which had displayed far the greater adventure. But just seven minutes after the re-start, it was United who edged a head courtesy of a an own goal. Jim Donaldson could only parry an Andy Rolland shot and full back Billy McManus ran the rebound into his own net. However, twelve minutes later Saints cancelled out that advantage when Ian McPhee beat Donald Mackay and teed the ball up for Leslie to equalise.
