When originally scheduled for 15th April, this was a match, which was potentially very important. However, events in the intervening period meant that Rangers had already claimed the Premier title. Despite this there was almost an eerie atmosphere within the stadium which was almost full.
From the kick-off, we attacked Rangers, but without troubling Chris Woods and it was, therefore, something of a shock to find ourselves trailing after quarter of an hour when Rangers scored with their first attack of note. A Sterland cross was flicked on by Stevens for Kevin Drinkell to head past Billy Thomson. Rangers second goal was a similar story coming again after the play being mainly dominated by United. Gary McGinnis had a shot which fizzed past the post before a Walters free-kick was nodded on by Brown, allowing Ally McCoist to rush in and nod past Billy Thomson after 34 minutes.
Thereafter the match, lacking its normal competitiveness, had an end of season air, though Mixu Paatelainen cut inside Stevens only to see Woods save his shot. In the dying minutes Billy Thomson touched a McCoist shot over the bar, but by then it was academic.
