The third hurdle of what had been a tough week brought about exactly the same end product — a single goal defeat. The unwelcome treble also virtually killed off any hopes we had of winning a trophy this season.
As per usual in a new firm derby there was little between the sides. Aberdeen did make the early running but only a Hewitt chip and wayward Bett shot offered any threat in the opening quarter of an hour. For the remainder of that opening half we controlled proceedings and Kevin Gallacher, Alex Cleland and Jim McInally all had chances with Snelders also saving a Kevin Gallacher shot from the edge of the box.
As the second period progressed yet another draw looked on the cards until Bett carved out a chance, which Charlie Nicholas tucked away in the 67th minute. Whilst Irvine and Mason had chances to add to that goal, debutant Charlie Adam almost snatched an equaliser when his header from a Maurice Malpas cross sneaked past the post with Snelders, for once, looking vulnerable.
