Match report

It came as no surprise that this match ended goalless, because this has now been the outcome of the last four encounters with the Tynecastle men. For most of the ninety minutes there was little to indicate that any other result would materialise. Towards half-time there was a flurry of activity at both ends which brought the nearest we had to a goal. Hamish French embarked on a mazy run and fired in a shot which Smith saved, diving to his left. Then Kevin Gallacher found rare space in a congested area but his angled shot drifted past the far post. On the stroke of half-time Hearts would have taken the lead but for a flying save by Billy Thomson.

A corner from the left was headed in by Colquhoun, but Billy twisted in mid-air to tip the ball over the bar. If anything defences were even more dominant with neither goalkeeper seriously threatened. There were a couple of exceptions to that. First was a save by Billy Thomson as he saved a 25 yard drive from Colquhoun. Then just before the end Kevin Gallacher turned McPherson inside out, but his low shot was saved by Smith.
