Derby meetings last season, and there were nine of them in total, turned out to be all close fought affairs. The first Derby of the new season, however, was dominated by United, as we recorded the biggest away win of the new Premier season.
We dominated from the beginning, but it wasn't until after Wes Saunders was booked in the 18th minute that we took the lead. That came three minutes later when Billy McKinlay swung over a corner which Mixu Paatelainen powered home via the underside of the bar.
Dundee did get the ball in the net seven minutes later but Billy Kirkwood's 'goal' was ruled out because of an offside decision. In the 37th minute we went two ahead. Ian Redford flicked the ball on to Kevin Gallacher, who strode on to beat Geddes.
After the interval Dundee enjoyed their best spell of the match and Tommy Coyne almost pulled one back, but Billy Thomson blocked his shot. As the second half progressed, we re-asserted our dominance and sealed the points with a third goal in the 69th minute. Paul Hegarty back-headed an Alec Cleland cross for Mixu Paatelainen to plant a header past Geddes.
So our great record at Dens Park continued, with Dundee having only one Derby win on home territory in sixteen League attempts.
