After a tentative opening by both sides, a curling shot by Hamish French, which drifted past the far post was the first serious threat on goal in the 7th minute. Shortly afterwards a real old scramble developed in the Hearts goalmouth following a comer. It ended with Paul Hegarty shooting straight at Henry Smith. Hearts came back and Kenny Black shot just wide and then the former Rangers and Motherwell player created an opening for Gavin but Billy Thomson was alert to stop his cute flick.

A minute before the interval we had a strong penalty appeal turn down when Hamish French was tripped in the box.The tempo of the second half was similar with the best chance falling to Hearts, but Billy Thomson made a great save from Murray's effort five minutes from time.
