Match Report

Celtic won at Tannadice for the first time in over three years, but they could count themselves lucky not to snatch both points after a game literally of two halves.

The Parkhead men dominated the opening forty-five minutes, then there was no doubting our superiority after the break. During the first half Paul McStay was outstanding as he played a series of passes from midfield. But for all that Billy Thomson only had to deal with a diving header from Joe Miller, before an apparently accidental hand ball by skipper Maurice Malpas was harshly penalised by a spot kick award, allowing Andy Wallker to score his twentieth goal of the season. Ironically, our appeal for a similar offence on the stroke of half-time fell on deaf ears.

We opened the second half threateningly. Jim McInally struck a volley just over the top and skipper Maurice Malpas had a drive saved by McKnight. Less than 10 minutes after the restart, Mixu Paatelainen replaced Ian Redford and Mixu was heavily involved in our equaliser, with limited space managed to get a cross over, Mixu flicked the ball on to Iain Ferguson, waiting at the far post. Iain promptly despatched the ball home from just inside the six yard box. A few minutes later McKnight had to dive full length to keep out a tremendous 25 yard drive by Iain Ferguson, otherwise bound for the postage stamp comer. In the 79th minute the combination which brought our equaliser almost struck gold again. Kevin Gallacher's low cross was touched by Mixu and Iain Ferguson just couldn't apply the finishing touch. With three minutes left John Clark and Mixu Paatelainen both went for a comer, Mixu got the final touch but the ball sailed wide of the target. Celtic promptly broke quickly and Joe Miller met Chris Morris's long ball to head the ball past Billy Thomson for a late late winner.
