Although we lost this match there was a great deal more optimism in the Tannadice camp after a much improved performance. In fact, had Iain Ferguson scored from the spot in the 15th minute, we might well have earned a point. Ultimately the outcome of the match hinged on a two minute spell early in the first half. In the 13th minute Ally McCoist was adjudged to have been brought down by Billy Thomson in the box and, as he inevitabley seems to do against us, Ally McCoist scored from the spot. Ninety seconds later, it was our turn to be awarded a penalty. Trevor Francis tripped Kevin Gallacher in the corner of the box and referee then immediately pointed to the spot. Unfortunately, Iain Ferguson drove his spot kick wide of the target. A short pass-back by Roberts almost let Kevin Gallacher in for the equaiiser but Woods came to the rescue, diving at Kev's feet. Kevin was then put clear but his angled drive crept past the far post. On the half our mark Billy Thomson made a fine save from Francis. At half-time we could consider ourselves unfortunate to be trailing to that McCoist penalty.
In the second half Rangers dominated more and we were lucky to escape in the 65th minute when Fleck struck the post twice within seconds, and then Ally McCoist shot past. Wilkins and Gough were also not far off the target with Gordon McLeod getting in our best effort of the second half.
