Hearts came as League Leaders and their performance fully justified that tag. We matched them for the first half hour but after John Robertson had put them ahead, Hearts clicked into the same kind form with which they hammered us at Tynecastle. The first real chance of the match fell to us in the ninth minute. Billy McKinlay robbed Gary Mackay deep on the left. Billy knocked the ball back to the edge of the box where Jim Mclnally met it. His volley was blocked by lain Ferguson who wheeled quickly and shot, but the ball struck the side-netting. Hearts replied with a spell of pressure, but failed to find their way to Billy Thomson. The first real signs of danger came in the 28th minute when Billy Thomson brilliantly punched away a fierce John Robertson drive. Two minutes later disaster struck, an Eamonn Bannon pass-back meant for Billy Thomson was intercepted by John Robertson who rammed the ball in at the near post. Eight minutes later Hearts went further ahead in simplistic style. Black slung over a cross and John Robertson, unmarked, headed wide of Billy Thomson.
Hearts continued to dominate after the interval and Colquhoun was only just too high with a drive after 56 minutes. In 65 minutes Levein headed down a corner and Wayne Foster flicked the ball past Billy Thomson from close in. Hearts almost got a fourth in the 71st minute when John Robertson broke clear but his lob was a might too high.
