Match Report

Perhaps it was the presence of an observer from Stavanger, their UEFA Cup opponents, but United disguised their true worth against a Kilmarnock team which was willing and able enough to give them a hard afternoon's work. There was only one change from the team that reached the League Cup semi-finals through the week, with Iain Phillip missing the trip to Rugby Park. Midfielder Ian Britton came back into the starting eleven, with John Holt returning from injury to take a place on the bench. Eamonn Bannon was still missing from the squad after failing a fitness test in midweek.

Ralph Milne was involved in a lot of the early action, having a fierce shot whislte just past after a free-kick. Kilmarnock's Derrick McDicken was booked for dissent after one clash with the winger, and Sammy McGivern also had his name taken for a foul on the same player. Kilmarnock, who had been on the receiving end of a hammering from Rangers in midweek, took a shock lead in the 28th minute. Brian Gallagher looked offside when he accepted McDicken's pass and shot past Hamish McAlpine, but the goal stood.

Only a penalty 16 minutes from the end kept the Tannadice team's unbeaten record intact. McDicken fouled Paul Sturrock inside the penalty area, and Ralph Milne aptly scored from the spot. However, it was Kilmarnock who put on the pressure in an attempt to grasp the winner near the end. With Celtic dropping points at home to Aberdeen, United's draw meant that they missed out on an opportunity to sit at the top of the table.
