The disappointment of Wednesday night's defeat by Vitkovice was quickly forgotten in the wake of yet another excellent result at Parkhead. Though not one of our best performances at Parkhead, we still did enough to merit both points. The first half was short of incident. Paul McStay hit the outside of the post whilst Eamonn Bannon immediately set off on a mazy run and hit a shot just past. Then Andy Walker somehow contrived to screw the ball over with an empty goal at his mercy. Immediately prior to the half-time whistle Jim McInally sent over a cross to lain Ferguson but lain's header was directed straight at Bonner.
Early in the second half, Billy Thomson twice came to the rescue, blocking an Archdeacon drive with his feet and bravely clutching the ball from Walker's feet. The appearance of substitute Paul Kinnaird mid-way through the half altered the course of the game. His corner from the left was flicked on by John Clark to lain Ferguson, whose shot was saved by Bonner. The ball broke to John Clark who somehow managed to beat the forest of defenders legs to open the scoring in the 79th minute. Two minutes from the end, Paul Kinnaird scampered clear of Chris Morris to deliver the perfect cross which Iain Ferguson coolly slotted home. It hardly mattered that Celtic sub Tony Shepherd pulled one back with a shot from the edge of the box which was aided by a slight deflection off Maurice Malpas, because only seconds remained.
