Like last week's match with Rangers, this was another hard fought midfield battle. Certainly there was a great deal more by way of chances in the first half, but the second provided less in the way of goalmouth highlights. Part of the reason for that was the loss of Hamish French at half-time. The former Highland League star returned to the side for the first time since the opening day of the season, and looked to have picked up where he had left off, contributing to our best spell of the match in the opening twenty minutes. Leighton, however, wasn't seriously troubled until midway through the half when he pulled off a flying save from Gary McGinnis' 30 yard first time drive. Aberdeen gradually forced their way into the match and Billy Thomson was at full stretch to tip a Falconer header over and do likewise when John Hewitt cracked in a rasping 25 yarder. Billy then came to our rescue when he brilliantly denied Joe Miller who had taken advantage of a misplaced pass-back. At the other end Paul Hegarty's powerful header went narrowly past the far post.
The second half was a great deal more subdued with the best chance falling to us after John Clark had replaced Jim McInally. Leighton was penalised for carrying the ball outside the box. Dave Bowman rolled the free-kick to John Clark whose fierce low drive struck the inside of the post and rebounded to safety.
