Match Report

This morale boosting win over the Ibrox millionaires couldn't have been better timed. When you consider that we were deprived of the likes of Hamish French, Kevin Gallacher and Paul Sturrock. The result was all the more commendable and a tribute to competitiveness shown by all the players in tangerine. With our injury problems and a Rangers line-up which included seven defenders, early indications were that a goal-less draw was highly probable. You could count on one hand the shots at goal in the first half. Ally McCoist headed wide in front of goal and a five minute spell of intense pressure on the Ibrox defence summed up a lack-lustre opening 45 minutes.

Things didn't improve vastly in the second half, with Iain Ferugson contriving a rare opening, but his shot sailed just over. Only quarter of an hour remained when the decisive goal arrived. lain Ferguson pushed the ball out to Paul Kinnaird on the right wing. Paul jinxed past Munro to the bye-line and his perfect cross was met by Iain Ferguson who headed fiercely past a stranded Chris Woods. This stung Rangers into an attacking frame of mind and with Trevor Francis introduced into the attack, the Ibrox men at last produced some activity around Billy Thomson. Much of it was huff and puff with Billy not really having to make a save, and it was at the other end that a second goal almost came. Paul Hegarty headed down an Eamonn Bannon cross to Ian Redford, whose dipping volley from the edge of the box struck the top of the bar.
