After a sluggish start this was a match which we ended up winning with some style. We paid for a hesitant opening when Morton took the lead in ten minutes, after the visitors had applied a good deal of pressure. Using a ploy often utilised by ourselves, Jimmy Robertson's corner was headed on by Doak, on the edge of the box, and Dougie Robertson re-directed the ball past Billy Thomson from close in.
The United 'keeper came to our rescue on the half hour mark, with a superb save from Jimmy Robertson's 25 yard drive. Our equaliser came as a result of a piece of benevolence by Doak. The defender, on the edge of the box, needlessly stopped a Paul Sturrock flick with his hand. From the penalty Ian Redford tucked the ball inside Wylie's left-hand post in the 33rd minute. Five minutes later we went ahead. John Holt worked his way past a couple of defenders and laid on a pass for Kevin Gallacher, who fairly hammered over the cross. Wylie failed to hold it and Paul Sturrock wheeled to lash in the loose ball.
Dougie Robertson should have equalised five minutes into the second half. He pounced on a Paul Hegarty pass, rounded Dave Narey and curled in a shot past Billy Thomson, but it struck the outside of the post. A series of United attacks brought several chances. Iain Ferguson scooped over a Paul Sturrock cut-back, and then saw Wylie block his netbound shot with his feet. When a third goal did come, it was thanks to a quite scintillating move. Iain Ferguson's first-time crossfield pass released Kevin Gallacher, whose looping cross was met by Jim McInally, who crisply volleyed past Wylie after 72 minutes. The match ended with Wylie denying lain Ferguson, who had sent in a swerving left foot shot.
