For United's third trip to Glasgow in ten days, manager Jim McLean made one change from the midweek defeat to Celtic, with John Holt replacing Derek Murray. For United's third trip to Glasgow in ten days, manager Jim McLean made one change from the midweek defeat to Celtic, with John Holt replacing Derek Murray. With both United and Rangers battling it out with St Mirren and Hibs for two UEFA Cup places, at least a point at Ibrox was vital.

Early in the game, Billy Kirkwood found himself in a great position but his fierce volley was well saved by Jim Stewart. John MacDonald shot yards over the bar in Rangers first real attack, but soon after the striker put the home side in front, shrugged off a Dave Narey tackle and shooting into the net via the post. Derek Johnstone saw a flying header skim the top of the bar just before half-time, as United failed to build on the early promise.

A more attacking United side appearance after the interval, with John Holt coming close on two occasions. After a glaring miss by Davie Dodds, United were awarded a penalty when Holt was pulled down inside the box by Ally Dawson, and Eamonn Bannon equalised from the spot with half an hour left to play - his 11th penalty of the season. Both Davie Dodds and Billy Kirkwood had great chances to sew up both points which on the balance of play would have been no more than we deserved.

With Hibs beating St Mirren at Easter Road, there was now just three points between the four clubs.
