The same eleven who lost unluckily at Easter Road were entrusted with the task of trying to prise both points from Broomfield. Play swung from end to end throughout most of this match, but it was the home side who went behind. Alex Cleland instigated proceedings with a fine right wing foray. He released the ball to Paddy Connolly who played a one-two with Duncan Ferguson before threading the ball out wide to John O'Neil and when his cross was delivered into the middle, Duncan Ferguson headed the ball powerfully downwards and past Martin. Alan Main saved at the feet of Owen Coyle and only the angle of bar and post stopped Maurice Malpas turning a Lawrence cross into his own net. Airdrie continued to threaten immediately after the interval and spurned a great opportunity to draw level six minutes into the second period.
Alex Cleland was adjudged to have impeded Coyle's run, but Black's spot-kick was brilliantly saved and then held by Alan Main. Alex Cleland then cleared off the line, but was then instrumental in setting up our second goal. He launched a long clearance out of defence. Sandison left it to go through to Martin, but Duncan Ferguson reached the ball first to prod it past the Airdrie keeper and into an empty net. Even a second goal failed to subdue the Diamonds and they pulled one back when Owen Coyle turned a Smith header over the line with five minutes left, but we held on to win what had been a thoroughly entertaining game.
