With Dave Narey doubtful since the midweek match with Monaco, and John Holt out through suspension, Richard Gough and Frank Kopel were drafted into the starting eleven for the trip to Edinburgh. Hamish McAlpine and Derek Stark both recovered from minor injuries to make the game against a Hibs side in the midst of a change of ownership.
United were first to create, when Ralph Milne ran fully 50 yards before crossing to Davie Dodds, who headed straight at keeper Jim cArthur. Hibs then had a chance, but Ally MacLeod mis-kicked in front of goal, and Gough did similar at the other end after Paul Sturrock carved out the chance. After another MacLeod chance for Hibs, Davie Dodds was booked for dissent after conceding a free-kick in the 38th minute. One minute before the interval Davie Dodds shot the visitors in front after a brilliant move by Phillip and Sturrock.
Hibs manager Bertie Auld brought both his subs on at half-time, and Arthur Duncan grabbed the equaliser for Hibs five minutes after the restart, snatching the ball from the fingers of McAlpine to put the ball into the net. McAlpine made amends later, pulling off a fine save from Derek Rodier, and United stormed the home goal throughout the second half, but their finishing let them down and both teams settled for a point.
