United's hopes of clinching for themselves a Fairs Cup spot for the following season appeared slim when they travelled to Firhill with the dismal record of never having won there for 30 years. However, things changed during 90 minutes in which the bogey was laid to rest.
The home side gave every indication early on that they were in no mood to give up their proud record over the men from Tannadice, and indeed took a deserved lead when Rae touched in a low cross from Bone. Thistle failed to add to that lead however despite some heavy pressure, thus allowing United to push their way into contention after the break down the right. Tommy Dunne's lob deceived Billy Ritchie and the ball rebounded from the crossbar for Davie Wilson to hammer in the equaliser. This boosted the visitors and after they had managed to gain the upper hand late in the game it was left to Davie Wilson to do it again with a rasping volley from a Jim Henry cross.
