With defender Dave Narey and Finn Mixu Paatelainen missing through injury, it was a youthful Tannadice eleven which met an experienced Tynecastle side. The Tynecastle men had already qualified for a UEFA Cup spot and had the advantage of a stiff breeze in the first half during which Alan Main pulled off top class saves from Colquhoun and Crabbe. Against that our best chance of that opening period came when Darren Jackson blazed a Hamish French cut back over the bar.
That was a foretaste of things to come because within a minute of the restart Darren Jackson took a long ball from Freddy van Der Hoorn before crashing the ball past Henry Smith. Then Darren almost put us further ahead, but two minutes later Hearts equalised when Alan McLaren headed home a Tosh McKinlay cross. Following that both sides could make out a good case for victory. Alan Main brilliantly saved a rocket shot from Eamonn Bannon and, conversely, Smith had to act extremely alertly to grab a John Clark shot. Hearts then had strong claims for a penalty rejected whilst we had the ball in the net with nine minutes left, but Darren Jackson was adjudged offside.
