For the second successive season our final match of the campaign was against Motherwell, but the circumstances were a far from the captivating Cup Final of the previous year. Fir Park's lowest crowd of the season saw the home side open brightly enough, but it wasn't long before we were threatening Thomson's charge.
In the 11th minute, Christian Dailly ought to have scored, but twenty minutes later the youngster was instrumental in putting us ahead. Christian's square pass inside found Grant Johnson who rammed the ball low past Billy Thomson from the edge of the box.
Slackness in defence allowed Ian Angus to level matters early in the second half when he was allowed time to control and turn before sweeping a shot into the net from close range. In our previous three meetings with Motherwell, the Steelmen had grabbed a late goal to salvage a point, so there was a degree of retribution when we forged a winner in the last ten minutes. Alex Cleland and Duncan Ferguson had been rested after their midweek exertions for the Scottish Under 21's, but it was this pair, both of whom had come on as second half substitutes, who combined to produce our winner. Alec Cleland made ground on the right before sending over a cross which Duncan Ferguson nodded past Billy Thomson. So we concluded the season with our first win over Motherwell in four attempts and that was enough to ensure that we finished in fourth place at the end of a long and hectic campaign.
