Ray McKinnon, who was out because of flu the previous week and Cleland, who was serving a one match ban, both returned. The home side made the more telling start to the match with Guido van de Kamp twice having to race from goal to avert danger, but soon the action switched to the other end as we got back into the game. First Duncan Ferguson connected with a John Clark free kick and the ball sneaked narrowly pat the post, but soon afterwards the young striker was to enjoy better fortune as he latched on to pass from Jim McInally destined for Darren Jackson. Duncan Ferguson promptly lashed the ball into the net he was tackled on the edge of the box. Three minutes from half-time Guido van de Kamp tipped over a Wright 30 yarder at full stretch and the big Dutch 'keeper was beaten as the half ended in high drama. Guido van de Kamp was adjudged to have brought down Arkins in the box and Paul Wright slammed home the penalty award.
