Match Report

The visit of St. Mirren produced a highly controversial match which saw our 100% record in 1992 well and truly shattered. There was little evidence in the early stages that we were going to struggle as badly as we did. In the second minute Money saved from Mixu who cut inside to create space to shoot. Ten minutes later, Money saved Alex Cleland's shot. Within a couple of minutes we found ourselves trailing. Saints won their first corner of the game and Gunni Torfason rose to head in Elliot's kick. Five minutes later Victor Ferreyra blocked a Dave Bowman header close to the line as we went in search of the equaliser. However, the outcome of the match was decided by an incident in the 33rd minute which brought mass protest from the Tangerines, Stickroth's corner was met by Dawson and Alex Cleland saved on the line, but the referee adjudged the United defender had used an arm and in addition to awarding a penalty, sent Alex Cleland off for deliberate hand-ball. Ironically, the same thing had happened on almost exactly the same spot during Saints first visit of the season, but then it was McWhirter who was the victim as Saints were reduced to ten men and a goal behind after only ninety seconds. Gunni Torfason netted the spot kick as we fell two goals in arrears. In an untidy period leading up to the interval McGowne and Torfason of St. Mirren were booked as was Victor Ferreyra immediately before half-time.

An eventful match for Saints' Icelander Torfason, came to a premature end when he was stretchered off with a badly cut leg after an accidental clash with Guido van de Kamp. We passed up a great chance to pull one back with a little under twenty minutes to go when Maurice Malpas put Victor Ferreyra clear. The Argentinian striker evaded Money and Darren Jackson ran in to side-foot the ball inches wide of an unguarded net. A goal then might just have triggered a revival but any hopes of that were well and truly dashed. When Dave Bowman's trip earned him a yellow card and Chic Charnley, who had only minutes earlier came on as a sub, stepped up to fire home the free kick from 30 yards out into the bottom left hand corner. Jim McInally pulled one back 2 minutes later, and with twelve minutes remaining Darren Jackson carved out a chance but it was not to be.
