The same eleven who had earned both points at Brockville were entrusted with the task of trying to breakdown an Airdrie defence which hadn't conceded a goal in their last three outings. That proud record was almost dented in the fifth minute when Dave Bowman got in behind the Diamonds defence and cut the ball back from the bye-line, but Duncan Ferguson shot over the bar. Airdrie replied in the twelfth minute when Boyle controlled a Kirkwood cross and hit an angled shot across the face of the goal and past the far post. Such goalmouth action wasn't to set the trend of a match which was for the most part, a story of near complete territorially ascendancy by United against a defiant and resolute Airdrie defence.
Even on the rare occasions that we did manage to pierce the visitors rearguard, we found 'keeper John Martin in equally defiant mood. In the 59th minute he tipped a Maurice Malpas shot from just outside the box over the bar. The Airdrie goalie then dealt comfortably with a Freddy Van der Hoorn shot from a short free-kick, but was at full stretch to tip over a fierce first time volley from Victor Ferreyra who had replaced Ray McKinnon in the 64th minute. With ten minutes left, John Clark curled a free-kick fractionally over the top as we stepped up our efforts. Two minutes later came the deserved breakthrough. Alex Cleland flighted over a ball from the right which Mixu Paatelainen flicked on to Duncan Ferguson whose hooked shot was going wide of the far post until Victor Ferreyra stole in to guide the ball past Martin into the far corner from an acute angle. Having taken so long to prise open their defence it was disconcerting to find ourselves pegged back to equality within a couple of minutes when Davie Kirkwood struck a thunderous volley which raged into the far comer after the ball had been knocked out to him.
Fortunately, the drama wasn't over and with only two minutes remaining Darren Jackson controlled a long ball out of defence and engineered himself precious space before curling in a great shot from just outside the box which Martin managed to get a hand to, but couldn't prevent the ball going over the line to give us a victory which our domination of the play alone warranted.
