Though no one knew it at the time, this was to be a Scottish Cup Final rehearsal with both sides due to play in the semi-finals the following weekend.
United started as though they were going to give a repeat performance of their 4-1 thrashing doled out to Rangers just 17 days earlier. United got their noses in front after quarter of an hour when Ralph Milne took a crossfield pass from Eamonn Bannon before weaving through the home defence and hammer in a shot which Stewart saved, but the winger carried on to head the loose ball over the keeper. For some reason United appeared to switch off then and Bobby Russell equalised ten minutes later, chesting down a long Miller throw before slamming the ball home.
From then on United never looked like winning, although it still took a penalty kick to decide the game in Rangers direction. Dave Narey made a rare slip, allowing MacDonald to get through and Hamish McAlpine brought him down in the box. Ian Redford converted the spot-kick and the game was over in the 62nd minute despite a late flurry of shots by United near the end. So not a good day for United, but note that Ibrox turn-out for two sides sitting in third and fourth spot in the league!
