A depleted Dundee United team made short work of Heart of Midlothian at a gusty Tynecastle. United were missing Ralph Milne, John Holt and Davie Dodds, and also had to suffer losing Paul Hegarty during the first half with a nasty head injury. However, they managed to take the lead in the first minute.
Exploiting the awful conditions, a wind assisted corner kick from Eamonn Bannon was headed into the net by Paul Sturrock. Twenty minutes later, it was 2-0. Frank Kopel sent a perfect pass through to the onrushing Billy Kirkwood, who slotted the ball past the out-rushing Hearts goalkeeper John Brough. United lost Paul Hegarty after 38 minutes, who suffered concussion after an unpleasant but accidental head clash with Gary Liddell. Hegarty was replaced by Graeme Payne. United did not let that blow derail them.
Having to play against the gale force wind in the second half did not affect their dominance either, despite the occasional flurry from the home team and a penalty shout when Kopel appeared to handle the ball in the United box. Midway through the second half, with United well in control, they increased their lead. Paul Sturrock latched on to a poor back pass from Alex Hamill to make it 3-0. United’s fourth and final goal came in the 82nd minute. Billy Kirkwood beat the home side’s ineffective offside trap, dummied Brough in the Hearts goal and ran the ball into an empty net.
