A late soft penalty scored by Aberdeen, the league leaders, eight minutes from the end of a classic match gave the home side a share of the points which they scarcely deserved. Once Davie Dodds had headed United into the lead, Aberdeen had struggled against a composed Tannadice side who always looked in command and capable of winning until that controversial penalty.
Just before United did score Ralph Milne hit the bar with a header from an Eamonn Bannon cross. Then in the 38th minute. United went in front with a glorious goal. Paul Hegarty began it all with a long ball from midfield which Paul Sturrock chased 40 yards out to the touchline before passing to Eamonn Bannon. He crossed to the far post where Davie Dodds outjumped everyone to score with a powerful header.
Apart from Paul Hegarty clearing a Hewitt shot off the line midway through the second half, the points appeared Tannadice bound. Then eight minutes from time Mark McGhee seemed to deliberately run against Dave Narey and the referee astounded the United supporters in the capacity crowd by awarding a penalty from which Ian Scanlon scored a less than deserved equaliser.
