Jim McLean made two changes from the team that defeated Hearts at the weekend, with strikers Davie Dodds and Willie Pettigrew coming in, and Ian Gibson missing out and Joe Ward dropped to the bench. Celtic came back into it in the second half when McGarvey and Nicholas replaced the ineffective Doyle and McCluskey. In 80 minutes Ian Philip had a miraculous clearance off the line from a Nicholas shot. Two minutes later and Philip was the villain when he knocked a cross into the path of Charlie Nicholas who smacked the ball in off Stark's despairing legs.
With the tie all square, United now had to travel to Glasgow for the second league without the lead that they had hoped to be taking with them.
