Graham Payne dropped out to make way for lan Gibson, who was ineligible for United's midweek UEFA Cup tie. Payne was on the substitutes' bench along with Willie Pettigrew. The corner, taken by the former Tynecastle favourite, was flicked on by Paul Hegarty at the near post, sending the ball towards the top left-hand corner of the goal. Although Shields got a head to it the referee and linesman judged the ball has crossed the line.

There was a walk-out from one section of the ground when United scored their third after 77 minutes. The Hearts defence was left wide open when McAlpine hit a long clearance downfield and Paul Sturrock was able to latch on to the ball and comfortably shoot past the helpless Westwater to kill the game stone dead.
