The 'keeper and Narey got in each others way but fortunately for the pair the ball went just wide. Fourteen minutes into the second half and United brought on Kirkwood for Payne. This prove to be the turning point in the match. From a corner United claimed the ball had crossed the line but the ball appeared to bounce of the a Morton defender before being cleared. The referee consulted his linesman before over-ruling United's claims. Then with thirteen minutes remaining the super sub Billy Kirkwood smashed home the opener.
