Morton were first to threaten when Ritchie hammered a 25 year free-kick through the United wall and McAlpine had to look lively to beat away the effort. United came close just on the quarter hour mark. Paul Sturrock broke free down the right before crossing. Ward nipped in and struck his effort just skimming over the bar. Sturrock weaved his way to the by-line soon after but his cross found no-one waiting. Much of the first half was confined to the midfield with neither side really looking like scoring.
Tolmie almost broke the deadlock early in the second half when he shot hard at McAlpine from the edge of the box. The 'keeper and Narey got in each others way but fortunately for the pair the ball went just wide. Fourteen minutes into the second half and United brought on Kirkwood for Payne. This prove to be the turning point in the match. From a corner United claimed the ball had crossed the line but the ball appeared to bounce of the a Morton defender before being cleared. The referee consulted his linesman before over-ruling United's claims. Then with thirteen minutes remaining the super sub Billy Kirkwood smashed home the opener. And as time ran out for Morton, who else but Billy Kirkwood appeared to double United's lead on 86.
