United hosted a visit from Hearts still looking for their first league win of the season after six league outings, but boosted by victory over Motherwell in midweek which had seen United advance into the quarter finals in our defence of the League Cup.

However, at the end of ninety minutes minutes, United were still searching for an elusive win and, in fact, only just avoided defeat . Dave Bowman was a promising youngster who had just broken into the Hearts team that season and it was Bobby Moncur's men who took the lead thanks to a goal from Derek O'Connor. And that was how things stood as the game went into injury time.

However, Davie Dodds popped up to score a typical goal right at the death to avoid the embarrassment of defeat against a Hearts side that was to be relegated at the end of the season. Failure to secure a victory left United hovering dangerously close to the foot of the table in eighth position with just five points from seven games.
