In the early part, and indeed, for most of the game United were well on top, but without seriously troubling Combe until the 16th minute when the Saints keeper was at full stretch, keeping out Brewster's shot on the' turn with his right foot.
If United dominated the opening half hour, Saints had the better of things in the run up to the interval and went ahead in the 33rd minute when Mclntyre swept the ball inches wide from 12 yards.
Eighteen minutes from the end, Craig Brewster was unlucky to see his shot from just outside the area hit the post, but that was the nearest either side came to deciding the tie within the regulation ninety minutes.
Extra-time was seven minutes old when the goal which was to give United victory arrived. Gary Bollan headed the ball forward. Hetherston failed to cut it out which enabled Jerren Nixon to pounce on it before delivering a cross from the left to Dragutin Ristic at the far post and he executed a neat angled finish from eight yards to score his first goal for United.
Saints mounted only a couple of dangerous attacks, but the United defence with David Craig impressing in the nine minutes in which he was on the park held firm to maintain United's 100% record against St Mirren in this competition in nine meetings, but perhaps the most surprising statistic of the evening was, that 120 minutes play produced not one single booking!
