Match Report

As recently crowned League Cup winners, there were a lot of teams out to show what they could do against Dundee United. Kilmarnock were one of those, but if there were to pick up anything from this match, they would have to do it the hard way as they were missing four players for disciplinary reasons.

United kicked off in dazzling style, with some fantastic outfield manoeuvres that had Killie penned back in the opening periods but he Rugby Park side always looked threatening on the counter. Despite United's early dominance, they didn't test McCulloch until the 17th minute. Kopel managed to get in an awkward shot which the Killie 'keeper was able to save. Then McLean had to head a Kirkwood header of the goal-line with the 'keeper beaten, and Willie Pettigrew could have done better that shoot high and wide from a clear chance. McAlpine then made a great save at Houston's feet. Despite a 0-0 half time scoreline, the fans had been served up a wonderful match.

After the turn around, Bobby Street soon had the ball behind McAlpine, but the whistle had previously gone for offside. Then Hamish tipped over a dangerous Street lob before McCulloch, at the other end, hogged the limelight again with spellbinding saves from Fleming, Pettigrew, and Kopel, in that order. Killie's stand ins did well with young Ken Armstrong saving the day on multiple occasions while at centre half. Fleming, Hegarty, Narey, Sturrock and Dodds always looked the part for United. The tangerines were great on the day in everything except the vital art of net-stretching.
