United extended their unbeaten run to 12 matches and in the process secured a place in the last eight of the Scottish Cup for the third consecutive season since winning the competition. A goal by Robbie Winters after only four minutes proved crucial. But even before that, Lars Zetterlund was unlucky not to have found the net for the first time after he ran on to a Perry chip, but his first time shot the bar.
Respite for the visitors was very brief. From the corner which ensued, Maurice Malpas headed a clearance back into the six yard box, and Robbie Winters, unmarked, headed in at Rousset's right-hand post. Hearts were reeling under United's whirlwind start with Kjell Olofsson whipping in a cross which Lars just failed to make contact with. Apart from a McPherson header which Sieb Dykstra clutched low down at his near post, most of the action was confined to the midfield area. However, Hearts almost equalised just before the interval. Colin Cameron was released through on Sieb Dykstra, but the keeper spread himself to block the shot and Unifed went into the break still ahead.
Although Hearts may have had more of game in the second period they created few, if any chances. A Robertson volley which dipped fiercely over and a Ritchie header which Sieb Dykstra saved being about the sum total of their efforts until the last minute when Sieb Dykstra was at full stretch to hold a McPherson header. Earlier Steven Pressley had a shot saved by Rousset and Gary McSwegan mis-hit a shot to give the Hearts deeper an easy save. offer Ae Tannadice substihjte had created the opening for himself. But in the cup, one goal is enough provided you don't concede any and with the application and organisation so lacking at Rugby Park, reinstated, Hearts rarely looked like finding a way past a United defence in outstanding form.
