Match Report

A great start to United's new campaign on their return to the Premier Division wasn't capitalised upon. With the Motherwell defence caught napping, Gary McSwegan sent a diving header past Scott Howie from Ray McKinnon's free kick to make it 1-0 in five minutes. More chances fell United's way, but they failed to take them and midway through the half, the visitors finally came to life. Only a finger-tip save by Ally Maxwell kept out Billy Davies first time shot through a ruck of players. However, the move of the match ended when Gary McSwegan shot past after great work by Dave Bowman and Owen Coyle.

The Motherwell goal survived a couple of goalmouth scrambles at the start of the second half, and Billy Davies again tested Ally Maxwell when he powered in a free-kick, but the United 'keeper blocked his effort. Although United were dictating play, Motherwell broke to the other end and after a brief spell of pressure, and Mitchell van der Gaag hooked in a McMillan cross from ten yards to score a goal which had looked beyond the visitors. Both sides had chances before the end. Substitute Alex Burns going close for Motherwell whilst Neil Duffy just failed to make it a scoring debut, heading a Robbie Winters cross from the right the wrong side of the far post. In the end, United had to make do with a point on their return to the Premier Division.
