Match Report

Dave Narey and Derek Addison came into the United side as a replacement for Jim Kerr and Billy Kirkwood. Kirkwood dropped to the bench and United's midweek signing from Chelsea, Striker Jim Doherty, came in as the other sub.

Addison made his mark on the game after just 30 seconds when he flew into a tackle on Fletcher. The referee gave him a stern warning but nothing more. Then Sturrock found space on the wing and was able to float a cross over for Pettigrew. The striker got his head to the ball but his effort went high and wide. Dundee then had the best chance to open the scoring. Schaedler won the ball deep in the Dundee half and squared it to Murphy. The winger sent a long through ball to Sinclair. The striker rounded Hegarty after the defender slipped but Sinclair delayed his shot and McAlpine rushed out to save. Former Dens favourite Iain Phillip tried his luck for United with a shot from the edge of the box after 18 minutes, but it flew past Donaldson's post. It was all United, and Fleming headed goanward after a cross from Sturrock, only for it to be blocked by Bobby Glennie. Donaldson pulled off a fine double save with 10 minutes of the half remaining. He rose to punch away a Kopel corner but a United head sent it goanward again but Donaldson blocked the effort. Dundee opened the scoring when a long ball into the box found Eric Sinclair in space and he blasted into the roof of the net from close range.

United pressed for the equaliser from the kick off. Sturrock threatened by outstripping Barr and sent over a cross with which Fleming failed to connect properly. There were United claims for a penalty in 50 minutes when Payne was felled at the feet of Barr, but the claims were rightly ignored. Ally Donaldson then had to be at his most courageous when he was challenged by Hegarty. He dropped the cross from Payne, allowing Hegarty to take a swipe at it, before he smothered the ball. The game ebbed and flowed as both sides tried to take a stranglehold of the game. Despite their best efforts neither side were able to get the ball into the back of the net. The result left United floundering in the lower echelons of the league. Dundee had Donaldson to thank for keep the goals against blank.
