Match Report

Hamish McAlpine made just his second appearance of the season for Unite, in place of the injured Peter Bonetti. United also made number of positional changes from the previous week. Ian Phillip returned to the side and Ballantyne was dropped.

Celtic threatened early when Provan turned Kopel on the right and McAlpine had to make two attempts to grasp his awkward cross. Celtic were making an aggressive start and looked desperate to get into an early lead. Provan then created danger with a curving shot on the right and McCluskey met it with a flashing header that crashed off the post. United were quick to counter and from a Payne free-kick, Sturrock's effort went just over. Addison then came close when his effort was diverted for a corner kick. The Celtic striker, George McCluskey, put his side ahead after 21 minutes. Doyle put in a corner that was headed back across the goal by Doyle and McCluskey was there to side foot it past McAlpine. Kopel thought he had cleared it off the line but the referee adjudged it over the line. Fleming had a claim for a penalty in the 40th minute when he looked to be obstructed by McGrain. The referee however was having none of it. However, on the stroke of half-time United were awarded a spot kick. Payne found Fleming with a cue through ball into the box. But as he rose to connect, Aitken bundled him off the ball and the ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Willie Pettigrew converted a penalty to show that our problems in finding a regular spot kick taker may have been over.

Thirteen minutes into the second half, George McCluskey put Celtic back in front again. Doyle doggedly won possession about 30 yards out before running into a pack of United players. He was upended and McCluskey walked up to lash an unstoppable drive beyond the despairing McAlpine. United tried to change things in 63 minutes when they brought on Milne for Phillips. But it was all Celtic at this stage and MacLeod had a magnificent 25 yard drive tipped over the bar by McAlpine. In 70 minutes Kirkwood broke into the Celtic box but shot when he should have played in Pettigrew. Parkhead was then stunned into silence as United pulled a goal back out of nothing. With just under quarter of an hour to go, Ralph Milne rescued a deserved point with a superb long range strike. United had to come from behind twice at Parkhead to cancel out a brace from George McCluskey.
